MAGNETIC LAB OBJECTIVE: TO DISCOVER THE PROPERTIES OF MAGNETIC AND ELECTRICAL
FIELDS.
STEP 1- Take one of the ceramic magnets and place a pencil
through it. Dangle the magnet and pencil from the table with a piece of string.
Compare to a compass and observe magnetic North & South. (Note effect on
compass : directional changes during the investigations.)
STEP 2- Observe one magnet is placed flat on the table and
another brought close to it - till it touches and then pick up the one magnet.
(See Magnetometer handout.)
STEP 3- Place one magnet on the wooden dial rod and then place
one on with opposite polarity. Measure the distance in between to the best of
your ability. Continue adding magnetic rings and measuring their distances. Then
try two on the bottom. Make a chart
& graph of your results.
One magnet on bottom.
Two magnets on bottom. Three
magnets on bottom.

STEP 4- Set up a triangle of three magnets and dangle one with string from the
table edge and observe: (see pendulum chaotic motion handout).
STEP 5-
Get a printout of at least two different magnetic fields using two different
magnets.
Attach and label poles (North /South) etc.
