Data accuracy and precision is one fundamental principal that leads to a broader understanding of higher level concepts. The accuracy and precision of data is critical.

Objectives:

1. Distinguish between accuracy and precision.

2. Investigate the relationship between accuracy and precision.

3. Write clear procedures and recognize the limitations of those procedures.

I .Beginning Procedures:

  1. Create 5 equal size balls from the clay, any shape.
  2. Place your procedure on an index card to leave at your station.
  3. Drop the shapes as close to the center of the bull’s-eye as possible from a height of 1 meter. Utilize colors to code the trial results.  Blue-1, Green-2, etc.
  4. Experiment to find a method to drop the shapes as close to the center of the bull’s-eye as possible consistently. Maximize your accuracy and precision.
  5. Record the results of your three (3) trials of dropping the five shapes (15). Score: the total for all three trials = _______ (5,4,3,2,1,0).  Make a Key!

II. Switching Procedures:

1.      Switch lab groups and utilize their method, procedures and shapes.
Record the results of your three (3) trials of dropping the five shapes (15).

2.      Record your results as different colors (shapes, X’s or stars).

3.      Score: the total for all three trials = _______ (5,4,3,2,1,0). Make a Key!

4.      Compare results and procedures given ( See question # 4 ).

III. Write a paragraph (six sentences) answering the four questions below.

1.   Describe the difference between accuracy and precision.

2.  Evaluate your trial results to the other lab group’s trial results.

  3.  Determine the limits (error) to the method/ procedures (shape, weight, sticky…)

  4.  Were the other lab group’s procedures clear?  Are clear procedures important?

Note: Staple/ attach your procedure card to this lab.
