Activity DESP 2.1: Internet Data       I.M.S. SCIENCE       Name: __________________________

Pump It! Burn It! Ship It! Academic Standards:3.5, 3.8     Period: ______ Date: ______SCORE:____ /  20
Objectives: Oil production, consumption (thousands of bbls), and reserves (millions of bbls)

1.      Describe the geographic distribution of worldwide oil production and consumption.

2.      Recognized that many countries must import oil, and where the largest reserves are located.

3.      Understand that present and future supplies of oil reserves are not equally distributed.

Materials: Internet , www.scied.net , this handout, current on-line data BP, colored pencils, markers.
(Go to TYP, Natural resources, statistical review of world energy, chart energy data, launch chart tool)
*(Also view: statistical review downloads: then review by energy type (click on slide pack download) oil etc.

Procedure:  Students choose data and print one reserves (of 4), production (of 3) and consumption (USA).

Student's then explore other graphs for oil production, consumption, and reserves.

Student's analysis of constructed graphs will follow by answering the interpretation questions.

Interpretation questions:

1.      List the five countries with the greatest quantities of proven oil reserves. One region: _________________

5.

2. How is the rest of the world affected when the oil reserves are concentrated in one area?

3. Which countries consume more than one million barrels of oil per day and are able to produce enough to meet that demand?

      5.

4. If a country produces more oil than it needs, what does it do with the extra?_________________________

5. List the three countries and one geographic area (region) that use the most oil.

Which transportation method concerns you the most?___________  Why? _____________________________

8. The Exxon Valdez oil spill in March, 1989 was one of the largest spills ever recorded. The spill was estimated to be approximately 11 million gallons.  How does this compare with the daily consumption of the United States ( 21,000,000 bls a day)?____________________________________________________________
Remember 1 barrel = 42 gallons.  11 million gallons / 42 =  ___________
                                                           _____________/ 21,000,000 million bls per day) = as a percent ______%
