Environmental Mini-Project:
Water Pollution
Lab Period: ______ Date: __________ Score:______/10
Materials: Color-coded paper tokens, Pollutant information sheet, and internet.
The four major categories of pollution are chemical (1), thermal (2), organic (3) and ecological (4).
Note: Humans primarily cause the first three types of pollution.
See the Pollutant Information sheet for the Color-code.
1. Each research team will analyze the pollution content
of a hypothetical river.
Name your river:
_________________ One type of pollution is represented by one color
(Color-code)!
2. Using the color key, you should identify each type of pollutant.

3. Once this is done, you should count the number of each kind of pollutant identified.
4. Use this paper to construct a simple bar graph showing the whole array of pollutants.
5. Compare your results with other research teams.
6. Now, any quantity above two (2) units of each kind of
pollutant is considered damaging
to the wildlife habitat.
In your river sample what was the kind of pollutants that would
likely
cause the most
damage to wildlife and wildlife
habitat?
7. Do you know what the safe levels for any of these
pollutants?
